Singer Bonnie Tyler has awakened from a coma but remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, according to an update on her official website. The husky-voiced, Grammy-nominated pop icon, aged 75, underwent emergency intestinal surgery last month in Faro, Portugal, where she resides, leading to her placement in a medically induced coma.
Although she is now out of the coma, her recovery process is gradual, with doctors expressing optimism about her eventual full recovery. However, they emphasize that it will require a significant amount of time. Consequently, her performances scheduled until August have been either canceled or rescheduled, but there is hope that her autumn shows will proceed as planned.
Bonnie Tyler is renowned for her 1980s chart-topping power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a timeless karaoke favorite that garners newfound popularity during solar or lunar eclipses. Hailing from Wales, the daughter of a coal miner, she initially found success in 1978 with “It’s a Heartache” before solidifying her place in music history with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” penned by Jim Steinman, the producer and songwriter known for his work with Meat Loaf.
