India’s new high commissioner in Ottawa has emphasized that India will not apologize for the Nijjar assassination or other alleged violent acts attributed to New Delhi by Canada, despite improving relations between the two countries. Dinesh Patnaik dismissed the allegations made by the RCMP and the Canadian government as baseless during an interview with CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live. The upcoming trial in a New York courtroom next March is expected to reveal evidence contradicting the claims of innocence.
Patnaik highlighted the efforts of both Prime Ministers to enhance bilateral relations, following a meeting between Mark Carney and Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in Johannesburg. Various sectors, including trade, nuclear issues, education, and more, are under discussion to strengthen ties and move past previous tensions.
However, concerns persist within Canada’s Sikh community regarding the swift normalization of relations with India. Balpreet Singh from the World Sikh Organization expressed apprehension, stating that India may exploit Canada’s perceived leniency on security matters.
Despite the ongoing threats and violence experienced by Sikh activists, Patnaik defended India’s stance, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for both Canadians and Indians. He mentioned the recent listing of the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist group by Canada, underscoring collaborative efforts to address security threats.
