Luke Skywalker’s iconic lightsaber from the film series “Star Wars” was auctioned off for a staggering $3.75 million US (about $5.15 million Cdn), as revealed by Heritage Auctions on Wednesday. Crafted by makeup artist Stuart Freeborn, the lightsaber includes a model-cast of actor Mark Hamill’s hand that was detached in a famous scene. Initially set with a starting bid of $1 million US ($1.42 million Cdn), the final sale exceeded all expectations and marked a record for screen-used “Star Wars” props, according to the Dallas auction house.

The lightsaber, famously wielded in the “Cloud City” duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in the 1980 film “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back,” was in the possession of Stuart Freeborn, known for creating characters like Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, and Chewbacca, until Heritage Auctions acquired it in 1994.

This sale surpassed the previous records set by the $3.135 million US ($4.44 million Cdn) sale of a 50-centimeter X-wing starfighter prop in 2023, and the $3.6 million US ($5.1 million Cdn) sale of Darth Vader’s lightsaber from “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” However, it falls short of the $3.875 million US ($5.49 million Cdn) sale of a half-sheet “key poster” painting for “A New Hope” in 2025.

Heritage Auctions’ executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, highlighted the strong interest in entertainment memorabilia, stating that fans from the 1970s and ’80s, raised on films like “Jaws” and “Star Wars,” are driving prices up as they seek connections to the movies that shaped their lives.

The market for film collectibles is thriving, with props from various iconic films fetching millions at auctions. Heritage Auctions has been a prominent player in these sales, with a growing recognition of the significance of popular culture among buyers.

Unlike traditional artworks, film props are not frequently resold and hold sentimental value for fans of the movies or artists associated with them. Last year, personal belongings of the late Leonard Cohen, including a composition notebook with poems and lyrics, fetched significant sums at auction. Similarly, celebrities like Kim Kardashian are known to collect and wear famous film-related items, such as Princess Diana’s pendant and Jackie Kennedy’s Cartier watch.

The auction of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber underscores the enthusiastic interest in entertainment memorabilia, with fans and collectors eagerly participating in the market for iconic pieces from beloved films.
