Summer McIntosh, a 19-year-old swimmer from Toronto, has once again made waves in the pool in 2025. She clinched The Canadian Press female athlete of the year award for the third consecutive year. McIntosh’s outstanding performance included securing four gold medals at the world championship in Singapore, following her setting of three world records at national trials.

In a remarkable feat, McIntosh became only the second woman, after American star Katie Ledecky in 2015, to win gold in four individual events at a single world championship. Her stellar achievements began at the national trials in Victoria, where she broke world records in the 400-metre freestyle, individual medley, and 200-metre individual medley.

Expressing her confidence, McIntosh revealed her ambition of claiming five gold medals in five races in Singapore. She emphasized her dedication to aiming for the top in every race, especially at major events like the Olympics or world championships.

Despite narrowly missing her goal, McIntosh triumphed in the 400 and 200 individual medleys, 400 freestyle, and 200 butterfly events, while also earning a bronze in the 800 free. She acknowledged the overwhelming support she received from Swimming Canada and fans back in Canada throughout her journey.

The Canadian Press female athlete award, which McIntosh secured for the third consecutive year, saw her receive 34 out of 53 votes. Her exceptional performance in 2025 left a lasting impression on voters, with many admiring her determination and success in the pool.

After a successful 2024 Paris Olympics, McIntosh shifted her training base to France and later to Austin, Texas, to train with renowned coaches and elite swimmers. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, including a health issue in October, McIntosh remained resilient and bounced back with victories at the U.S. Open in December.

Looking ahead, with no major championships scheduled for 2026, McIntosh’s focus remains on improving her own world records and setting new milestones in her swimming career.
