Swiss skiing sensation Marco Odermatt showcased his dominance once again at the Adelboden giant slalom event, securing an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory on Saturday. Despite challenging weather conditions with snowfall and reduced visibility, Odermatt maintained his lead from the first run to clinch the win by 0.49 seconds over Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, with France’s Leo Anguenot finishing third, 0.68 seconds behind.
Pinheiro Braathen, acknowledging Odermatt’s prowess, praised the Swiss skier as the “king of the hill” and expressed his admiration for competing against him in such a prestigious race. Odermatt’s triumph in Adelboden since 2022 has surpassed the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s four consecutive wins from 1979 to 1982, solidifying his special bond with the event.
The passionate crowd of approximately 25,000 spectators added to the electric atmosphere, fueling Odermatt’s performance with their unwavering support. The skier credited the home fans for pushing him to excel, emphasizing the motivation and pressure they provided.
Before the race commenced, a moment of silence was observed to honor the victims of a tragic fire in a nearby bar. Odermatt’s stellar season continues, with his latest triumph marking his 51st career race victory, placing him fourth on the all-time list and 29th in giant slalom.
Reflecting on his journey, Pinheiro Braathen highlighted his emotional return to Adelboden after a previous injury, expressing pride in overcoming his past struggles on the challenging course. The Adelboden giant slalom holds a rich history, dating back to 1967 when ski legend Jean-Claude Killy claimed the inaugural victory on the iconic Chuenisbaergli course.
While Odermatt opted to skip the upcoming slalom event, Pinheiro Braathen is poised to defend his 2023 win, setting the stage for another thrilling competition at Adelboden.
