A man from Regina, aged 42, has been taken into custody and accused in the death of Tanya Myers, who tragically lost her life after being shot while riding as a passenger in an SUV on a highway close to Weyburn, Saskatchewan, during the autumn season. Chris Fahlman faces several charges, including manslaughter with a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for criminal intent, and being in a vehicle with knowledge of a firearm inside.
Appearing remotely before the Regina provincial court on Monday, Fahlman’s case was adjourned until the following day by the judge. RCMP Inspector Ashley St. Germaine mentioned that no additional suspects are being sought in the incident. St. Germaine refrained from disclosing the specifics that led to Fahlman’s arrest, his prior interactions with law enforcement, and the location from which the fatal shot that claimed Myers’ life was fired.
St. Germaine confirmed that Fahlman was apprehended in Regina on Saturday following a comprehensive seven-week probe by the RCMP major crimes unit. During a virtual press briefing, St. Germaine stated that no direct link has been established between the accused and the individuals or vehicles affected by the gunfire.
Myers, aged 44, was a passenger in one of the two vehicles struck by bullets on Highway 39, near Weyburn, on the evening of September 12. The shooting incident instilled fear among local residents, with some expressing reluctance to travel on that stretch of Highway 39, apprehensive of a potential repeat occurrence.
Speculation arose suggesting the incident could have stemmed from a hunting mishap turned fatal, a notion that St. Germaine refrained from addressing directly. Andrea Morrice, the driver of the SUV in which Myers was shot, expressed a shift from sadness to anger upon learning about Fahlman’s arrest from the police on Saturday.
Morrice expressed her frustration, especially after reviewing Fahlman’s social media activity related to the shooting incident. She eagerly awaits the commencement of court proceedings to uncover further details about the tragic night and find closure. Fahlman’s defense counsel, Robert MacKay, emphasized the presumption of innocence and urged the public to withhold judgment in light of the recent arrest and charges.
Morrice recalled the harrowing moment when Myers was shot, highlighting the immediate distress and the subsequent discovery of the bullet hole in her vehicle. Another driver on Highway 39 at the time reported their vehicle being hit by gunfire, with a bullet retrieved from that SUV’s tire by the RCMP.
