“Nurse Assaulted in Hospital Parkade, Suspect Apprehended”

In a recent incident at St. Boniface Hospital, a man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault following an attack on a nurse in the hospital’s parkade. The nurse was accosted by the man after exiting her vehicle late in the evening. The assailant, unknown to her, inquired about the time and then proceeded to sexually assault her between parked vehicles.

Startled by the assault, the nurse raised an alarm, causing the man to flee. The hospital’s security team was promptly notified and contacted the police. Fortunately, the nurse did not sustain any physical injuries during the attack.

The alleged attacker was apprehended by hospital security the following morning and subsequently detained by the authorities. The 27-year-old suspect has been charged with sexual assault and remains in custody.

St. Boniface Hospital’s president, Nicole Aminot, revealed in a communication to staff that various safety measures have been implemented at the facility in the past two years. These include the deployment of overnight security patrols in the parkade, key-card access control for the stairwell on Taché Avenue, enhanced lighting, additional mirrors, and an upgraded security camera system.

Darlene Jackson, the president of the Manitoba Nurses Union, expressed dissatisfaction with the safety enhancements, stating that they are insufficient. She emphasized the need for greater efforts to ensure the safety of frontline workers, patients, and visitors in healthcare facilities.

Concerns about safety in hospitals have prompted nurses to consider “grey listing” facilities with a history of security issues. The need for heightened security measures was underscored by incidents of violence in Winnipeg hospitals, leading to ongoing discussions between healthcare providers, law enforcement, and union representatives.

The assailant involved in the recent incident at St. Boniface Hospital has a criminal record, including previous convictions for theft, robbery, and sexual assault. The attack occurred shortly after he pleaded guilty to robbery in a separate case.

As the investigation continues, authorities advise anyone in immediate danger to contact emergency services. Support resources are available through crisis hotlines and local services for individuals affected by sexual violence.
