In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women gathered to acknowledge the strides made and the ongoing gender equality endeavors. Dianne Porter, who led the council from 1986 to 1989, highlighted significant advancements in laws pertaining to rape, sexual assault, women’s legal rights, and Indigenous women’s rights over the past five decades. She credited the progress to the dedication of women involved in the cause.

Operating independently from the government, the council advocates for gender equality across Prince Edward Island. Established in 1975, the council’s formal recognition came with the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women Act in 1988, comprising nine Island women. Porter emphasized the crucial contributions of numerous women throughout the years in advancing societal well-being.

Council member and vice-chair Garima Mishra expressed gratitude for the empowering journey with the council, underscoring the essential role of women’s perspectives in achieving overall societal balance. Mishra highlighted the importance of diverse representation within the council and its partnerships to enhance inclusivity and awareness on the Island.

Looking ahead, Porter acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly concerning the cost of living and women’s status in the workforce. Mishra emphasized the significance of conveying women’s concerns to the provincial government to drive positive change and address daily challenges effectively. The council aims to amplify voices and influence policy decisions to enhance the well-being of women in society.
