All attention is focused on the potential Halloween weather outlook for Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), but the most recent special weather advisory from Environment Canada has slightly improved the outlook for trick-or-treating on Friday.
According to the weather agency, rain and high winds are anticipated on October 31, with the timeframe now projected to be from midday until the evening. Wind gusts may reach speeds of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour, and the region could experience 30 to 50 millimeters of rainfall.
While there is some uncertainty about the areas that may receive the heaviest rainfall, there is a possibility of significant accumulation in certain locations, prompting the potential need for warnings, as stated in the advisory.
In response to the expected inclement weather, Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations have rescheduled their trick-or-treating to Thursday. However, Mount Stewart will proceed with Halloween festivities as planned, with Mayor Amanda Myers announcing plans to open the community center for those who prefer indoor activities.
Summerside City confirmed that Halloween trick-or-treating will proceed as scheduled, with continuous monitoring of the weather forecast and coordination with emergency services. Conversely, Stratford Mayor Steve Ogden mentioned that there are no current plans to reschedule trick-or-treating in the town.
The adverse weather conditions are partly attributed to Hurricane Melissa, which recently passed over Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane before moving parallel to Nova Scotia. Another storm originating from Quebec is converging with Hurricane Melissa, potentially intensifying rainfall in P.E.I.
CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland highlighted the complexity of the forecast due to the interaction between the two weather systems, emphasizing the enhanced rainfall potential on the island.
Environment Canada’s latest guidance advises Islanders to prepare for the weather by clearing storm drains and gutters, as well as securing outdoor items like Halloween decorations and bins to prevent them from being affected by the anticipated strong winds.
