In Fredericton, predicting the next transport truck collision with the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge on Waterloo Row could earn you a reward. The city has reported that the bridge has been struck by transport trucks 15 times in under two decades, with the most recent incident occurring on a Friday.
Following two truck collisions with the bridge in September within three days, local businesses began offering prizes for individuals who could forecast the timing of the next accident. One of these businesses, the New England Pizza Company, located a short walk from the bridge, pledged a $100 gift card for multiple winners.
Owner Chris Babineau expressed surprise at the swift occurrence of a collision after monitoring social media and witnessing the latest impact immediately. The competition has seen over 20 winners so far, with Babineau sorting through a multitude of shared posts and comments totaling over 2,000.
The recent collision has resulted in Babineau providing over $2,000 worth of free pizzas to winners. He mentioned plans for future contests with sponsorships involved.
Babineau, a former truck driver, recalled a past incident where he and his father recognized the bridge’s unsuitability for their vehicle and opted to turn around. Despite ample signage warning truck drivers of the low clearance, most collisions are attributed to driver error or reliance on inaccurate GPS information, according to the City of Fredericton.
Chad McGarity, the owner of Traffic Zone Signs and Supplies, offered a $150 gift card and a custom-made sign to the individual who correctly predicted the number of days until the next collision. McGarity restarted the countdown following the latest incident, highlighting the initiative as a marketing tool and a means to raise public awareness.
The city assured that regular inspections are conducted on the bridge, alleviating concerns about structural integrity due to truck collisions. Babineau acknowledged the overwhelming engagement in his contest and noted instances of participants editing their comments to improve their chances of winning.
On a lighter note, Babineau playfully suggested potential penalties for participants, including the humorous threat of a cheeseless mushroom and pineapple pizza.
