U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, formerly a strong supporter of Donald Trump but now a critic of the president, announced on Friday that she will step down from her congressional position in January. In a video lasting over 10 minutes posted online, Greene clarified her decision, citing that she has always faced opposition in Washington, D.C., and never truly fit in.
The resignation of Greene came after a public fallout with Trump in recent times, where she openly criticized him on various issues such as files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, foreign policy, and healthcare. Subsequently, Trump labeled her a “traitor” and “wacky,” declaring his support for a rival candidate against her in the upcoming re-election.
Having been closely associated with the Republican president since the beginning of her political journey in 2020, Greene emphasized her unwavering loyalty to Trump in her video, except on a few particular matters. She expressed disappointment at being attacked by Trump for holding differing opinions, stating that loyalty should work both ways in politics.
Initially rising to power as part of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, Greene quickly became a polarizing figure in Capitol Hill due to her controversial viewpoints. Despite facing opposition from party leaders for embracing the QAnon conspiracy theory and associating with white supremacists, Trump praised her as “a real WINNER!”
Although initially met with skepticism, Greene eventually proved herself as a skillful legislator, aligning with then-GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who later became House Speaker. Her position as a trusted voice on the conservative side changed after McCarthy’s removal in 2023.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump hailed Greene’s upcoming resignation as “great news for the country.” Fellow House member Thomas Massie commended Greene for exemplifying the qualities of a true representative, while former Republican House member Barbara Comstock praised Greene’s decision, noting that she refused to endure Trump’s mistreatment and threats to end up in the minority.
On the contrary, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Greene’s transition from a Trump loyalist to a critic, highlighting that her actions did not align with her vocal stance. Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that despite Greene’s rhetoric, she continued to support legislation that undermined healthcare and promoted corrupt practices.
