Two individuals lost their lives and 13 others sustained injuries in Kyiv due to Russian missile and drone strikes in Ukraine overnight, which also targeted infrastructure and energy facilities, as per Ukrainian authorities on Saturday. The attack resulted in multiple fires and inflicted damage on residential structures, including a kindergarten, as reported by city officials.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated that the strikes once again aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure, accusing Russia of trying to create a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine during the winter. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha mentioned that Russian missiles and drones targeted the energy grid, railroads, and residences in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Sumy.

The Russian Defence Ministry announced via Telegram that the overnight attacks focused on Ukraine’s military-industrial enterprises and energy infrastructure that support its operations. They claimed to have downed 121 Ukrainian drones, including seven en route to Moscow.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of Patriot air defense systems to safeguard Ukrainian cities from ongoing Russian assaults. He highlighted that Russia had launched numerous ballistic and ‘Kinzhal’ missiles at Ukraine this year, underscoring the importance of acquiring Patriot systems for defense.

Firefighters in Kyiv battled fires across the city, with large smoke clouds visible on Saturday morning. Zelenskyy urged Western nations to provide air defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities and deter further attacks. Ukraine is currently in negotiations to purchase 25 Patriot air defense systems from the U.S.

Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting and downing a significant number of missiles and drones launched during the overnight attacks, with multiple hits recorded at various locations nationwide. Zelenskyy called for international assistance to prevent future attacks and safeguard lives.

The effectiveness of Patriot systems in countering Russian ballistic missiles was underscored, emphasizing the need for support from America, Europe, and G7 nations to mitigate threats posed by such attacks.
