“Saskatchewan First Nations Health Ombudsperson Exposes Healthcare Discrimination”

The Saskatchewan First Nations health ombudsperson has highlighted the ongoing challenges in addressing discrimination within the province’s healthcare system. Ombudsperson Dianne Lafond unveiled a report covering the period from July 2023 to March 31, 2025, showcasing the office’s efforts.

Over the past two years, the office has handled approximately 500 complaints from Indigenous individuals struggling to access necessary medical assistance. A significant portion, 64%, of these cases were linked to issues with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) services. Lafond emphasized that a majority of complaints originated from remote northern communities previously lacking proximity to healthcare services, now finding a platform to voice their grievances.

During a press conference in Saskatoon, Lafond noted concerns about rural hospitals facing closures due to staffing shortages, hindering service accessibility. Similar reports emerged from central areas like Shellbrook, with Saskatoon residents voicing frustrations over extended wait times exceeding 20 hours.

Instances of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse within the healthcare system were also brought to light by numerous individuals. Whistleblowers and families shared their traumatic experiences, with some individuals restrained by non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) from formal complaints, perpetuating a culture of silence.

Lafond’s office, the sole entity of its kind in Canada, has spearheaded efforts to address these systemic issues. Despite the lack of benchmarks or a roadmap for guidance, Lafond expressed pride in the initiative’s progress and impact.

The SHA acknowledged the report’s existence but had not yet reviewed its contents as of the latest update. While not directly addressing abuse allegations, the SHA emphasized its commitment to collaborating with the ombudsperson to address specific concerns and enhance the healthcare system’s accountability, cultural responsiveness, and inclusivity.
