Conservationist Mark Thomas recently shared in an interview that the survival of a rare bird species in the United Kingdom has been significantly boosted by the exceptional breeding success of a single male bird. This male, named AU, has fathered a remarkable 16 offspring, with 10 of them born in the past two years.
Montagu’s harriers, migratory birds of prey that breed in Europe, have faced a decline in population globally, with the UK population dwindling to near extinction levels at times. However, AU’s breeding success has been a ray of hope for the species in the UK, with his acrobatic mating displays attracting multiple females.
The conservation efforts have yielded positive results, with AU fathering six chicks this year. Conservationists are optimistic that his offspring, especially the males, will eventually return to breed in the UK. To protect the new hatchlings, the nests are closely monitored and safeguarded from potential threats on a British farm.
In a new initiative, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has fitted satellite trackers on two juvenile Montagu’s harriers to monitor their migration patterns and potential return to the UK for breeding. This tracking technology will provide valuable insights into the birds’ movements and aid conservation efforts in the future.
