Waterloo regional police have provided additional details about a recent tip that impacted multiple 2SLGBTQ+ gatherings in the community earlier this week. Threats of violence prompted the cancellation of the Beers with Queers event at a local brewery, and Spectrum, a community organization, shifted a planned gathering to a virtual setting on Tuesday.

Suzie Taka, the executive director of Spectrum, described the situation as tumultuous, with the tip creating a sense of ambiguity and unease. Organizers were advised to secure their premises and contact law enforcement immediately, leading to heightened fears among participants.

A spokesperson from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) informed CBC News that organizers of three local events were informed about the anonymous tip, which was initially described as a potential disruption at an unspecified 2SLGBTQI+ event in Kitchener on October 21, 2025. WRPS later clarified that the threat specifically involved the intention to cause violence.

Following the notification on Monday, police investigated the tip but found it lacking crucial details such as specific individuals or groups involved and the nature of the planned disruption. As a result, the investigation was closed without any charges being filed. WRPS encourages anyone with additional information to come forward to facilitate a potential reexamination.

Despite the lack of concrete information, the community expressed concerns about the handling of the situation. Spectrum responded by enhancing security measures for all upcoming events, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the need to prioritize safety.

Amy Smoke, a co-director of Willow River Centre, emphasized the community’s resilience in the face of threats, stating their commitment to continue supporting marginalized groups. The center proceeded with plans to mark its two-year anniversary, underscoring their determination to persevere despite challenges.

In conclusion, the community remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all members, reaffirming their dedication to supporting diverse communities amidst adversity.
