The Toronto Tempo, the sole WNBA team in Canada, is set to begin their season in May, but uncertainties loom over their preparations.
Negotiations between the league and players for a collective bargaining agreement have hit a roadblock, missing the initial deadline in October despite an extension. Teresa Resch, the team president, outlined plans for a permanent practice facility, engaging with the community on a mascot, and securing a local broadcast deal — a first in Canada’s history.
The Tempo, amidst much anticipation, recently appointed general manager Monica Wright Rogers and head coach Sandy Brondello. Brondello, a successful coach with championship experience from leading the New York Liberty and the Phoenix Mercury, joined the team in November.
Despite boasting over 30 staff members, the team is yet to finalize their player roster. The inaugural game is scheduled for May 8 against the Washington Mystics, as announced by the team.
Brondello, in an exclusive interview with CBC Sports, emphasized the importance of being proactive and adaptable in the face of potential challenges, especially in light of a looming work stoppage. She highlighted the need for swift action once the collective bargaining agreement is reached to kickstart the season smoothly.
With a focus on team cohesion and building a strong culture from the ground up, Brondello aims to create a lasting legacy for the Tempo. She values the support of the fans and the community, underscoring the significance of women’s sports empowerment in Toronto.
Brondello’s coaching philosophy revolves around authenticity and genuine connection with her players. She encourages aspiring athletes and coaches to stay true to themselves and embrace their uniqueness in pursuit of success.
As the Tempo gears up for their debut season, Brondello’s leadership and strategic planning will be pivotal in shaping the team’s identity and performance on and off the court.
