“Vancouver Pyrocumulus Clouds Spark Concern”

Photos capturing large cauliflower-like clouds have been surfacing on social media in the Vancouver area, identified as pyrocumulus clouds formed by a wildfire over 200 kilometers away. The B.C. Wildfire Service reported the discovery of the Anderson Creek fire while responding to nearby fires on Tuesday, which quickly intensified due to strong winds.

According to Matt Loney, a meteorologist from Environment Canada, the Anderson Creek fire exhibited significant heat output, leading to its rapid spread. Images shared on social media platforms depict towering cumulus clouds above dark smoke columns in the sky, visible from as far as Coquitlam, approximately 220 kilometers away.

Loney explained that any source of intense heat capable of generating strong convection currents can result in the formation of these clouds, where hot air ascends rapidly causing moisture to condense. He likened the process to opening a freezer door on a scorching summer day, creating fog that descends towards the ground due to temperature differentials.

The clouds contain various particulates like burning embers, dust, and ashes, visible to the naked eye. As the cloud reaches a certain temperature equilibrium, it spreads horizontally. The vertical growth of the pyrocumulus cloud from the Boston Bar-area fire indicates the extreme heat and atmospheric instability, making it visible from multiple viewpoints.

Rachel White, an assistant professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of British Columbia, expressed awe and concern over the photos of the clouds from the Fraser Canyon. She noted the potential for these clouds to trigger thunderstorms with lightning, posing a risk of igniting additional wildfires. White emphasized the unpredictable nature of cloud systems and their connection to lightning generation, emphasizing the danger they pose.
