A vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the front entrance of a Home Hardware store in Saskatoon early Friday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. CST on Central Avenue in the Sutherland neighborhood. Upon arrival at the scene, the Saskatoon Fire Department found the car inside the store, occupying the space where the front cash registers were previously located. They inspected the damage and ensured the vehicle was not operational or leaking any fluids.
Although no individuals were discovered inside the store, security cameras captured the suspects fleeing the area. Saskatoon Police reported that three people fled the scene following the crash and were not apprehended. The hit and run unit is currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
Store proprietor Wyatt Zacharias received a call from the authorities and arrived at the store around 3:30 a.m. CST to find the entrance severely damaged. Zacharias expressed gratitude that the incident occurred after business hours when no customers or employees were present, emphasizing the importance of everyone’s safety.
Reviewing the surveillance footage, Zacharias noted that both the driver and passenger appeared unharmed when leaving the crashed vehicle. He emphasized the relief that no injuries were sustained, stating that material possessions can be replaced, but the well-being of individuals is paramount.
Zacharias observed from the security video evidence that suggested the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, as they returned to the car to retrieve beer after exiting the building. Despite the extensive damage, Zacharias quickly mobilized his construction team, enabling the store to open as usual at 8 a.m.
Efforts to repair the store were promptly initiated, with the front entrance already patched, and a temporary till system set up to replace the damaged cash registers. Zacharias mentioned that permanent repairs are estimated to take a minimum of two months, with projected costs ranging between $30,000 and $40,000. He praised the immediate support received from customers and the community, emphasizing the positive relationships fostered within the community.
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with neighboring businesses offering assistance and gestures of support, including delivering doughnuts. Zacharias expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, highlighting the strong bonds being forged within the community amidst the challenging circumstances.
