The approved budget for the current year included a tax hike of 2.99 percent. To sustain existing services in the next fiscal year, an estimated $41 million increase in the operating budget is anticipated, necessitating a 4.2 percent property tax hike unless alternative strategies are implemented to boost income or reduce costs.
City staff have been tasked with identifying measures to achieve a potential tax levy decrease of five to 10 percent, amid rising construction project bids and other cost pressures. Operating and capital budgets have undergone scrutiny, with Dilkens set to refine them in collaboration with senior staff and council members.
Past proposals to trim expenses included options such as closing libraries and pools, but Dilkens is optimistic that feasible savings can be identified without resorting to such drastic measures. The mayor remains committed to maintaining tax increases at or below the inflation rate.
The looming economic uncertainties, including threats from President Trump, have underscored the need for a prudent fiscal approach. Dilkens is open to exploring outsourcing services and streamlining operations to enhance efficiency and navigate financial challenges facing the city.
