Top diplomats from the Group of Seven nations convened in the Niagara region this week to address global crises. However, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand refrained from discussing the stalled trade negotiations between Ottawa and the United States during the summit.
Anand and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in discussions on various topics such as Ukraine, the Middle East, Haiti, and Arctic sovereignty. Despite persistent inquiries regarding Canada-U.S. trade talks, Anand emphasized that Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc oversees that matter.
While acknowledging Minister LeBlanc’s dedicated efforts in trade negotiations, Anand underscored the collaborative work of G7 ministers. President Donald Trump halted trade discussions with Canada following an Ontario-sponsored advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
Despite Prime Minister Mark Carney’s apology for the ad and his amicable interaction with Trump at a global leaders’ gathering in South Korea, trade negotiations have not resumed. Anand concluded Canada’s G7 presidency by advocating for multilateralism and enhancing new trade partnerships in response to Trump’s tariff policies. She also extended invitations to other countries to participate in these efforts.
However, the U.S. military’s actions in the Caribbean, specifically targeting boats, overshadowed the two-day meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced additional casualties from recent strikes in international waters, totaling 76 deaths. The U.S. administration claimed to target narcotics traffickers without public evidence.
Amidst these developments, the United Kingdom ceased intelligence sharing with the U.S. on suspected traffickers in the region due to legal concerns. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, present at the G7 meeting in Ontario, also criticized the strikes as violations of international law.
Despite maintaining intelligence collaboration through Operation Caribbe to intercept narcotics bound for North America, Canada distanced itself from the controversial strikes. Anand clarified that the U.S. relies on its intelligence sources, and she did not address this issue with Rubio.
At the summit’s conclusion, G7 foreign ministers jointly issued a statement addressing geopolitical challenges, including the fragile ceasefire in Gaza and Indo-Pacific security. Notably, the statement expressed unwavering support for Ukraine following Russian aggression against its power grid and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the ministers announced new sanctions targeting Russia in response to ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. These sanctions, aligning with efforts by other G7 members, aim to increase economic pressure on Russia and deter its aggressive actions.
