Police apprehended a woman following the tragic demise of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter in Longueuil, Quebec. The infant was found at a bus shelter near the intersection of Chambly Road and Briggs Street. Authorities disclosed that a 33-year-old woman was taken into custody late in the morning on Monday. The woman’s mental and physical condition is under evaluation by investigators.

Although the woman’s relationship to the baby has not been confirmed, police mentioned the possibility of pursuing an infanticide charge. The baby, still attached to the placenta and exposed to the cold, was found naked. Paramedics from the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie reported that the infant was unconscious and required resuscitation efforts before being transported to the hospital.

In a statement on social media, the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) revealed that a bystander alerted emergency services about the infant around 6:30 a.m. on Monday. Immediate first aid was administered to the baby, who was subsequently transported to a medical facility. A police operation was initiated, prompting the closure of Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound to facilitate the investigation.

Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the abandonment and tragic death of the newborn, noting the similarity to a recent incident with different outcomes. Earlier this month, another newborn was discovered on a doorstep on Bourgeoys Street in Longueuil, wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still intact. Authorities released footage in an attempt to identify a person seen carrying what appeared to be a baby, clarifying that the two incidents are unrelated.

The city officials pledged to closely monitor the ongoing investigation and provide necessary support to the individual in custody during this vulnerable period.
