Premier Susan Holt of the Liberal government vows to expedite major decisions in the second year of her term, shifting gears from a year of consultations. Holt plans to introduce a significant increase in legislative bills compared to the previous year, aiming for three to four times more by the end of the year.

Having laid the groundwork, Holt expressed the need for swift action to implement the changes her team has initiated. She emphasized the importance of listening to New Brunswickers and various stakeholders in the past year, acknowledging calls for quicker progress.

Green Party Leader David Coon noted a slow pace in fulfilling campaign promises, stressing the necessity for structural reforms in public services, particularly in healthcare. Despite some unmet pledges, Holt remains committed to addressing issues such as the cost-of-carbon adjuster and systemic racism.

Looking ahead, Holt anticipates tough decisions in the upcoming year, with Lt.-Gov. Louise Imbeault set to deliver the government’s speech from the throne. The government plans to introduce legislation granting more autonomy to the chief medical officer of health and implementing trade agreements with other provinces. Additionally, changes are on the horizon for N.B. Power, with a review panel report expected by March 31 next year.

Holt reiterated the government’s stance against maintaining the status quo, emphasizing the need for a new direction to address longstanding challenges. The premier affirmed a proactive approach to chart a different course for the province’s future.
