William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced a challenging journey together after being diagnosed with advanced cancer within a few months of each other. The iconic 95-year-old Canadian actor, famous for his role as Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek,” revealed that he battled Stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain in June 2023.
Around the same time, Gretsch, aged 61, discovered a lump in her breast, leading to her own cancer diagnosis. Despite the difficult circumstances, the father and daughter found strength in each other. Gretsch, amidst chemotherapy, remembered seeking comfort from her father, who assured her that this would be just a temporary setback.
Shatner, who received his cancer diagnosis while Gretsch was still undergoing treatment, remained resilient and positive. Fortunately, both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recovery to excellent medical care. Gretsch detailed her extensive treatment regimen, including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy.
Shatner also underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his face, followed by a two-year immunotherapy course to combat the cancer in his lungs and brain. The shared experience has deepened their appreciation for life’s simple joys and moments, with Shatner reflecting on the beauty of nature and family.
