Molly, an African spurred tortoise, was discovered wandering at a slow pace near a large wetland in the Canadian prairie, sparking intrigue among Oak Hammock Marsh staff in Manitoba’s Interlake. The staff, led by Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter, rescued the 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving puzzling reports of sightings. Initially mistaken for a snapping turtle native to Manitoba, Molly’s true identity was confirmed when a sighting was logged on iNaturalist.
The staff were surprised by Molly’s size and unusual presence at the marsh, where they found her munching on cucumbers and flower petals. After some pampering and guided tours, the tortoise was eventually reunited with her family, who had been missing her since she escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.
