A team of divers from Canada, originally in search of the Rapid City wreck, may have made a remarkable discovery of an exceptionally well-preserved shipwreck that could predate expectations by 50 years. The unidentified object was first spotted during a survey in 2017, piquing the interest of archaeologist James Conolly from Trent University.
Initially believed to be the Rapid City, a schooner from 1884, the dive team, led by Heison Chak, explored the site to confirm Conolly’s hypothesis that the wreck’s depth of 100 meters had shielded it from human interference. Chak’s dive revealed a remarkably intact vessel with standing masts, a rare sight in shipwreck exploration.
Further examination hinted that the ship might be older than initially thought, possibly from the early 19th century. Unique features like rope rigging and the absence of certain equipment suggested a potential age difference of 50 to 100 years from the Rapid City’s era.
The discovery offers a valuable insight into a lesser-known period of Great Lakes shipbuilding history, particularly the period between 1800 to 1850. This era marked significant economic growth in the region, leading to the construction of numerous vessels for trade between Canada and the United States. However, limited records and high loss rates during this time make the discovery of such a well-preserved wreck a rare occurrence.
Experts, including Indiana University professor Charles Beeker, acknowledged the significance of the find but emphasized the need for further research to conclusively determine the vessel’s origin and historical context. Out of the thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, few are as well-preserved as this newly discovered wreck, making it a compelling subject for study and preservation efforts.
Chak and Conolly plan to return to the site in the upcoming dive season for detailed assessments and sampling to accurately date the vessel. They are also engaging in public outreach activities to raise awareness about maritime history preservation and seek funding for the conservation of the unique shipwreck.
