In Edmonton, infill developers are enhancing security measures following a series of suspicious fires at construction sites. Sean Sedgwick, head of the Infill Development in Edmonton Association (IDEA), mentioned that steps such as installing security cameras and hiring security personnel are being taken to ensure safety. The incidents, including six fires between Oct. 18 and Nov. 2 in King Edward Park, Belgravia, and Glenora, have raised concerns, with two additional fires occurring in September in the Highlands area. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.
Developers like Veneto Homes, which constructs single-family houses in neighborhoods like Bonnie Doon and Westmount, are increasing security precautions despite not being directly affected by the recent fires. Adrianna Chiumento, co-owner of Veneto Homes, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in safeguarding construction sites, as everyone is impacted by such incidents.
Various organizations, including BILD Edmonton Metro, have expressed solidarity with those affected by the fires and are working towards better protection for infill properties. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, along with the police and city officials, are set to meet with industry representatives to address the situation further. Fire Chief David Lazenby urged the public to report any suspicious activities and provide any potential evidence to aid in the investigations.
While the heightened security measures may incur additional costs and project delays for developers, Sedgwick emphasized that the primary concern for most infill builders in Edmonton is the well-being of the neighborhoods they operate in. The community remains vigilant in ensuring safety and preventing any further incidents.
