After the severe devastation caused by Melissa, a Category 5 hurricane, in Jamaica’s western region recently, various groups in Hamilton are coming together to provide assistance. The Jamaica Foundation of Hamilton, the Afro-Canadian Caribbean Association, and the Hamilton Caribbean Women’s Group are collaborating to coordinate aid for the island under the initiative named Hamilton Loves Jamaica.
Charlton Hamilton, a Jamaican resident of Hamilton for five decades, expressed astonishment at the unprecedented damage witnessed in his homeland. He recalled experiencing a hurricane back in 1951 but emphasized that if it had been anything like Melissa, Jamaica would not have survived.
Hamilton and other community members launched the relief campaign at City Hall on Tuesday. Michelle Shivbarran, the president of the Hamilton Caribbean Women’s Group, highlighted the significance of collective efforts among organizations. She stressed the importance of unity and collaboration to maximize impact and support.
Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, leaving up to 90% of structures in Black River, St. Elizabeth, without roofs and causing extensive damage to infrastructure. The hurricane has been attributed to at least 19 fatalities in Jamaica.
The relief initiative is seeking both monetary contributions and item donations. Specific items needed include feminine hygiene products and child care essentials, recognizing the additional burdens women face in caring for their families post-disaster.
Donations can be made at the ACCA Community Centre on 754 Barton St. E. Additionally, they are looking for items such as blankets, ropes, flashlights, water purification supplies, and personal hygiene products. Two fundraising events are scheduled, including a Benefit Concert for Jamaica Disaster Relief and a Fabulicious festival turned into a fundraising event.
Proceeds from these events and the sale of Hamilton Loves Jamaica merchandise will be directed to Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management. Hamilton, a devoted member of ACCA, emphasized the importance of community support during times of need and encouraged collective action in assisting those affected by disasters.
