Following the Emmys ceremony, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite started trending on social media as users criticized the lack of representation. Some users expressed disappointment in the outcome, highlighting the continued underrepresentation of actors of color in major award categories.
April Reign initiated the #OscarsSoWhite movement in 2015 after all 20 acting nominees for that year’s Academy Awards were white. Despite some efforts to address diversity issues in subsequent years, Reign emphasized that the recurring lack of representation at award shows like the Emmys indicates a systemic issue within the voting institution.
The Television Academy’s transparency report revealed that 67% of its members in 2026 were white, underscoring the ongoing need for increased diversity and inclusion. Reign stressed the importance of addressing representation issues beyond award season, starting from the early stages of production and casting decisions.
Although actors of color faced a shutout in the major acting categories at the Emmys, director Hiro Murai made history by winning the award for best directing in a comedy series for “Widow’s Bay.” This marked a significant achievement as Murai became the first Asian filmmaker to win in this category at the Emmys.
