In Igloolik, some residents are set for a return to the voting booths after a judicial recount revealed a tie between the two contenders seeking to represent the Aggu constituency. Incumbent Joanna Quassa and Erasmus Ivvalu both garnered 105 votes each, as confirmed by the recount results published on Elections Nunavut’s website.
Kiran Situt, Nunavut’s chief electoral officer, stated via email that a fresh election for the Aggu district will be arranged promptly. Additionally, recounting of ballots in Pangnirtung and Quttiktuq is currently underway. Situt anticipates the Pangnirtung recount to conclude by the end of Thursday, while the Quttiktuq recount is projected to finish by the end of Friday.
In the event that supplementary elections are necessitated in those regions, Situt disclosed plans to potentially synchronize the election schedules. Meanwhile, the orientation for the newly-elected MLAs in Nunavut commenced today. The leadership forum, where the Speaker, premier, and Cabinet will be elected by the MLAs, is slated for November 18. A single-day session of the new legislative assembly is scheduled for November 20.
