“Competition Bureau Probes Food Supply Chain Impact”

Share

The Competition Bureau is set to probe the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. The investigation will focus on three main areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing strategies. This comprehensive approach aims to identify areas requiring intervention by the bureau and suggest potential policy measures to enhance affordability.

Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, emphasizes the significance of food costs for all Canadians and highlights that robust competition is essential for maintaining reasonable prices. Pratt encourages industry stakeholders to provide input on their experiences in the sector.

The upcoming inquiry will expand on the results of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The final report, scheduled for release next spring, will contain insights and recommendations for policymakers on enhancing competition throughout the food supply chain.
