Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed as he discussed his upcoming movie, “Tony,” a biopic about the early life of renowned chef Anthony Bourdain. Despite the pressure of his approaching wedding and film shoot, Johnson seemed at ease with the project. He explained that he initially had no interest in Bourdain’s story but changed his mind after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays Bourdain in the film.
The movie focuses on Bourdain’s formative years working as a chef in Provincetown, Massachusetts, drawing inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential.” Johnson and Sessa deliberately avoided delving too deeply into Bourdain’s later life to sidestep the expectations set by his devoted fans.
Johnson emphasized that the film explores Bourdain’s complex relationships and struggles during his youth, steering clear of portraying him as a perfect figure. He believed this approach would make Bourdain’s story more relatable and valuable to audiences. “Tony” is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14.
The filmmakers aimed to capture a more human perspective of Bourdain, steering away from idealizing him and presenting a narrative that resonates with viewers. Through their collaboration, Johnson, Sessa, and Bourdain, in spirit, worked together to bring a genuine portrayal of the chef’s early experiences to the screen.
