“Former Alberta Deputy Premier’s Petition Against Separatism Gathers 456K Signatures”

A former deputy premier of Alberta has gathered over 456,000 signatures on a petition advocating for the province to remain part of Canada, surpassing the required threshold for a potential referendum. Thomas Lukaszuk, the initiator of the “Forever Canadian” petition, emphasized that the significant number of signatures indicates strong opposition to separatism in Alberta. Lukaszuk urged Premier Danielle Smith and Alberta MLAs to address the issue promptly and put an end to any separatist sentiments.

The petition was launched in response to separatist movements within the province, with Lukaszuk’s question asking if Alberta should continue as part of Canada. While the government under Smith’s leadership has encouraged Alberta’s Confederation membership, recent adjustments have made it easier for groups to propose referendums on independence by lowering the signature requirements.

Despite Lukaszuk’s hopes to avoid a referendum, he acknowledged that the decision ultimately rests with Premier Smith. The extensive efforts to collect signatures involved traveling thousands of kilometers across urban and rural areas, with Lukaszuk highlighting the personal stories and emotions shared by signatories during the process. Elections Alberta confirmed receipt of the signatures and outlined a verification process to ensure the authenticity of the petition.

Looking ahead, Lukaszuk expressed relief at the completion of the petition process and his anticipation of returning to regular activities. He emphasized the unity and pride demonstrated by Albertans in affirming their Canadian identity through the petition.
