“Frost Triumphs as PWHL Unites for Coach Battling Cancer”

The recent rematch between the 2025 Walter Cup finalists saw a lesser focus on hockey as the Professional Women’s Hockey League community united to show support for Ottawa Charge’s head coach Carla MacLeod as she battles breast cancer. Minnesota Frost captain Kendall Coyne Schofield, after scoring her first career PWHL hat trick, led her team to a decisive 5-1 victory over the Charge. This match marked the first meeting between the two teams since Minnesota secured their second consecutive Walter Cup title by defeating Ottawa in four games in May.

Despite the on-ice action, the primary concern remained MacLeod’s health. MacLeod publicly disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis on Sunday, expressing her determination to continue coaching as much as possible. The TD Place Arena crowd demonstrated solidarity by turning the stands pink in support of MacLeod, who received a heartfelt standing ovation despite her absence as she met with medical professionals.

Assistant coach Haley Irwin assumed the role of acting bench boss in MacLeod’s stead, emphasizing the team’s commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities, even in different capacities. The game began with the Charge struggling against the reigning champions, conceding three early goals within the first seven minutes. Despite Ottawa’s efforts to rally in the second period, Frost goaltender Nicole Hensley thwarted all 19 shots faced.

A highlight for the Charge was rookie defender Rory Guilday’s first PWHL goal on the power play in the third period. Looking ahead, the team embarks on a challenging five-game road trip, commencing with a matchup against the Toronto Sceptres on Thursday. The community’s unwavering support for MacLeod serves as a testament to the unity within the PWHL, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
