Legendary swimming coach Bob Bowman expressed his belief in the comparisons drawn between Michael Phelps and rising Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh. Bowman, renowned for mentoring Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals, noted the similarities in the talents and work ethic of both swimmers.
McIntosh, who recently excelled at the world championships in Singapore by clinching multiple gold and bronze medals, now trains under Bowman at the University of Texas. During a Pro Swim Series meet, she broke a 17-year-old record in the 400m individual medley, impressing both coach and athlete.
Despite McIntosh’s achievements, Bowman remains focused on enhancing her performance, emphasizing the importance of managing expectations and external pressures, particularly as they gear up for the L.A. 2028 Games. The duo’s collaboration aims to propel McIntosh to her goal of securing five gold medals at the upcoming Olympics.
Atkinson, the high-performance director of Swimming Canada, supports McIntosh’s collaboration with Bowman, ensuring alignment between the national program and the swimmer’s aspirations. McIntosh herself admires Bowman’s coaching style and dedication, highlighting their shared commitment to continuous improvement and achieving greatness in the pool.
As McIntosh pursues her swimming dreams, including breaking world records and excelling at the highest levels of competition, Bowman stresses the significance of long-term planning and gradual progress. The pair’s partnership is marked by mutual respect and a drive for excellence, with McIntosh also balancing her athletic pursuits with academic endeavors at the university.
Looking ahead, McIntosh and Bowman maintain a strategic approach to training and competition, striving for consistent growth and performance enhancements. Their shared vision and dedication underscore a promising journey towards Olympic success and swimming greatness for McIntosh under Bowman’s guidance.
