A 35-year-old man in Waverley, N.S., has been arrested for barricading himself in a home with a firearm in October. The Halifax RCMP reported on Monday that the man from Myers Point, who was not a resident of the home, is now charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm.
On October 27, residents in Waverley were advised to shelter in place briefly as police dealt with a potentially dangerous situation involving an armed man in a residence. Responding to a report before 7 a.m., officers found a man with a weapon barricaded inside a home on Waverley Road with no one else present.
Subsequently, an emergency alert was issued around 8:30 a.m. for individuals near the 2000 block of Waverley Road, instructing them to seek immediate shelter, lock doors and windows, and close off streets. Law enforcement, including officers, dog services, the RCMP emergency response team, and a crisis negotiator, were deployed to the scene.
By shortly after 9 a.m., the man was taken into custody, and the public was no longer at risk, as confirmed in an alert. Later that morning, authorities were seen removing items, including a rifle, from 2070 Waverley Road. Despite loud noises during the police operation, no shots were fired.
The man has been released under specific conditions and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth’s provincial court at a later date.
