Susan Petley felt a surge of emotions as she stepped onto the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. This was a moment she had longed for over the years, but the circumstances were bittersweet.
Overwhelmed with a mix of hurt, anger, and love, Petley tearfully accepted her daughter Bethany Anne Coupe’s high school diploma posthumously. Bethany had passed away from cancer in April, leaving a void as Petley held onto her other daughter, Cynthia, for support.
Bethany, aged 35, had faced health challenges that made completing her studies difficult. Despite battling pancreatic cancer and being told she had limited time, she persisted with her education, studying even from her hospital bed with the assistance of St. Michael’s staff.
Initially puzzled by Bethany’s determination, Petley later realized that her daughter’s goal was to make her mother proud and give her the best gift possible. Bethany had aspirations of attending St. Clair College to pursue a career helping children or animals.
During the graduation ceremony, Petley and Cynthia were accompanied by six siblings from the Teslfalem Arey family, who were celebrating their academic achievements together. One of the siblings, Rodas Tesfalem Arey, expressed pride in their accomplishments, with plans ranging from becoming mechanics, a personal support worker, pilot, and pharmacist technician.
Petley, amid the emotional evening, emphasized the importance of persevering towards one’s goals, inspired by her daughter’s unwavering resolve. She shared a message of encouragement, highlighting that with true determination, any obstacle can be overcome.
The ceremony marked the commencement of over 200 graduates at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School, showcasing stories of resilience and achievement within the community.
