Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that narrates the discovery of an ancient boulder unearthed in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a recent unveiling ceremony at Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan emphasized the importance of the sign for public education and engagement.
The signage details the history of the colossal erratic, now fondly referred to as the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was left in the area by glaciers around 10,000 years ago. Hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021, the boulder was uncovered by crews while replacing water pipes.
Amidst the pandemic lockdown, Sreenivasan and fellow residents found solace in the massive rock, using it as a gathering spot during the challenging times. The boulder became a focal point for interactions and a symbol of unity for the community.
When there were discussions about breaking the boulder into smaller pieces for removal, residents, led by Sreenivasan, advocated for its preservation. Beyond its geological significance, the boulder symbolized resilience and the power of community during times of isolation.
Following residents’ persistence, the boulder was relocated to Windsor Park, much to the delight of the community. Lindsay Suthren, a long-time resident, expressed excitement over the boulder’s relocation, highlighting the unexpected discovery on her former front lawn.
Sreenivasan hopes that the sign not only educates visitors about the boulder’s history but also serves as a reminder of the impact of community unity and collective action. The successful preservation of the boulder stands as a testament to the strength of community bonds and the positive outcomes that can result from collective efforts.
