The Vancouver Goldeneyes of the PWHL have named Ashton Bell as their first captain for the upcoming season. Bell, a key player in the Ottawa Charge’s previous season and an Olympic gold medallist, was chosen with the top pick in the expansion draft. Vancouver GM Cara Gardner Morey highlighted Bell’s strong leadership qualities as a significant factor in her selection.
Joining Bell in the leadership group are Claire Thompson and Sarah Nurse, who will serve as alternate captains. Thompson, a defender, and Nurse, a forward, both bring Olympic gold medals with Team Canada to the team. Thompson, who returned to professional hockey after attending medical school, had a successful PWHL campaign last season, winning the Walter Cup with the Minnesota Frost.
Nurse, who previously played for the Toronto Sceptres, is a top scorer in the PWHL and played a vital role in negotiating the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Gardner Morey praised Nurse as a player advocate and emphasized the trio’s leadership as crucial for the Goldeneyes’ inaugural season.
The Vancouver Goldeneyes are gearing up to face the Seattle Torrent in their first game, expected to draw a record attendance at the team’s home rink. The game will kick off the Goldeneyes’ debut season in the league, with high anticipation among fans for the matchup.
