“Ontario Sawmill Closure Sparks Community Crisis”

Share

The town of Ear Falls, Ontario, is currently grappling with a significant challenge following the abrupt and indefinite closure of its sawmill, which serves as the primary employer and economic engine for the community.

Interfor, the company in charge of the mill, recently made the decision to shut down operations, leaving approximately 150 unionized workers without employment, as indicated by the town’s mayor. This development has been described as more than just a job loss but a full-blown community crisis by Luke Hildebrand, the president of the NDP Kenora-Rainy River Riding Association and a legal practitioner specializing in First Nations law in Kenora.

In response to the situation, Hildebrand has initiated a petition urging both the Ontario and federal governments to intervene promptly to assist affected workers and establish a Forestry Job Protection Task Force. The petition emphasizes the essential role of the forestry sector in the Canadian economy, highlighting its significant contributions and the support it offers to numerous rural jobs, stressing the importance of Canadian lumber in domestic construction projects.

Ear Falls Mayor Kevin Kahoot expressed his shock upon learning about the shutdown shortly before the employees were officially notified. He described the news as unexpected and distressing for both him and the community. The company cited a stagnant lumber market and the impact of U.S. countervailing tariffs as primary reasons behind the closure.

Kahoot emphasized the longstanding significance of the sawmill, which has served as a pillar of stability in the community since its establishment in 1997. The facility has been a major source of employment, offering well-paying jobs, benefits, and a sense of security to its workforce. While the exact number of jobs at risk is yet to be confirmed, the mayor assured that the township is actively exploring all possible avenues in collaboration with the provincial government to address the situation.

Both Unifor and local government officials are calling for immediate government intervention following Interfor’s decision to close the Ear Falls sawmill indefinitely. Unifor emphasized the need for a coordinated national strategy to safeguard forestry jobs and mitigate external trade pressures.

The shutdown has garnered attention at both the provincial and federal levels, with politicians expressing concern over the impact on the community and advocating for support for the affected workers. Efforts are underway to protect Ontario’s forestry sector and ensure the well-being of its workforce through various initiatives and investments aimed at sustaining the industry and facilitating re-employment opportunities.
