Convicted serial rapist Sofyan Boalag, known for a series of sexual assaults in St. John’s over a decade ago, has passed away while incarcerated in an Ontario prison, as confirmed by Correctional Service Canada. Boalag, 46 years old, was serving an indefinite term at Bath Institution, a medium-security facility. The regional communications manager, Mike Shrider, stated that authorities will investigate his death, with police and a coroner being informed.
Boalag’s demise occurred on a Saturday, according to the official statement. In 2016, Boalag was found guilty of raping two women and a 15-year-old girl in Newfoundland between the summer and fall of 2012. He was labeled a dangerous offender and sentenced to an indeterminate time in prison in 2017. Boalag had initially served his term at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, N.B., where he made headlines after being attacked and stabbed multiple times in February 2023.
Following the incident, Boalag filed a lawsuit against the federal government, claiming he would be permanently disabled and alleging negligence on the part of prison staff. However, a statement from the Attorney General of Canada, released in February, asserted that Boalag had instigated the stabbing and failed to safeguard himself adequately.
