Sloan’s Chris Murphy is gearing up for a unique musical journey across the United Kingdom and Ireland as part of an R.E.M. tribute band led by actor Michael Shannon. The prospect of visiting Ireland, especially with a surname like Murphy, is particularly enticing for the bassist and frontman, who hasn’t had a professional stint in the U.K. for some time.
Known for his original works with Sloan like “Money City Maniacs” and “The Rest of My Life,” Murphy faces the challenge of mastering about two hours of meticulously recreated music from the iconic American rock band for this tribute tour, with only one rehearsal scheduled beforehand. Despite feeling a bit apprehensive, Murphy anticipates the experience to be enjoyable.
Having previously toured with groups such as Trans-Canada Highwaymen, where he played classic Canadian tunes from the ’60s and ’70s, Murphy acknowledges that the level of preparation required for this gig is on a different scale. While his primary role in Trans-Canada Highwaymen is as a live drummer, he expresses confidence in his ability to adapt to various musical styles.
The upcoming shows, titled Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy And Friends, will feature performances of R.E.M.’s 1986 album, “Lifes Rich Pageant,” alongside other hits from the band’s repertoire. With the group’s regular bassist, John Stirratt, unavailable due to prior commitments with Wilco, Murphy was enlisted for the tour based on his friendship with Narducy and the group’s drummer, Jon Wurster, whom he regards as kindred spirits.
Shannon, recognized for his acclaimed acting career and two Academy Award nominations, has been collaborating with Narducy in concert settings for over a decade, covering albums by artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and The Smiths. The current tour stems from a successful performance in 2023 at Chicago’s Metro, honoring the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s “Murmur,” which eventually evolved into a full-fledged tour for Shannon and Narducy.
The validation of having R.E.M. members join Shannon and Narducy on stage, and the band’s equitable income-sharing model among its members, serves as inspiration for Murphy and Sloan’s business approach. Despite the irony of playing R.E.M. music, given his bandmate Jay Ferguson’s admiration for the band, Murphy looks forward to the experience. Ferguson, coincidentally, will be in London during the tribute show’s stop there, prompting good-natured banter between the two musicians.
