A teenager who fatally attacked three individuals in Winnipeg’s Point Douglas neighborhood back in 2022 has been handed a life sentence in prison as an adult. Justice Gerald Chartier determined that due to the deliberate and premeditated nature of the assaults committed by the teenager at the age of 15, a youth sentence would not be appropriate.
The teenager, along with another 15-year-old, brutally assaulted three victims within a short span on August 22, 2022, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and severe injuries to the third victim. The attacks, involving repeated kicking and stomping, occurred in close proximity to each other.
Having pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter earlier this year, the teenager faced sentencing recommendations from both the defense and prosecutors. The defense suggested a maximum youth sentence, while the prosecutors pushed for an adult sentence, which carries life imprisonment terms for second-degree murder convictions.
The teenager will be ineligible for parole for seven years, as recommended by the Crown. Despite being diagnosed with ADHD, FASD, and mild intellectual disability, the court found the teenager to possess an adult-like moral capacity, as evidenced by the targeted nature of the attacks on vulnerable individuals.
The co-accused in the case also pleaded guilty to murder charges, with the prosecution pursuing an adult sentence. Another individual involved in the assault was sentenced to prison, while charges against a 14-year-old were dropped.
The severity of the beatings and the deliberate targeting of vulnerable victims indicate a level of awareness and moral culpability on the part of the teenager, leading to the decision for an adult sentence. The co-accused’s sentencing application is set for a future date.
