“TIFF: The Market Shifts Focus to Business Deals”

The Toronto International Festival, known for shaping industry trends, is adapting its focus to emphasize the business side of film buying and packaging. With other festivals becoming preferred choices for premieres, TIFF is rebranding to incorporate more dealmaking activities. Supported by a $23 million investment from Ottawa, TIFF: The Market is showcasing various projects up for grabs, including a sci-fi film featuring Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra. Despite this shift, TIFF faces competition from established industry players like the Cannes marketplace.

While positioning itself as a fall alternative to Cannes, TIFF is also up against the American Film Market in Los Angeles. The festival is highlighting emerging markets in Africa and Asia, attracting international buyers seeking alternatives to Hollywood. As ticket prices rise, concerns arise about the impact on passionate film fans who contribute to the festival’s unique atmosphere.

Although the number of A-listers attending TIFF may be decreasing, notable films are still making waves in Toronto. Danny Boyle’s “Ink” and Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut” are among the anticipated movies being showcased. Additionally, the Primetime program features TV series like Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” and the upcoming Crave series “Yaga,” offering a diverse range of content for attendees.

Canadian titles are also prominently featured at TIFF, reflecting the country’s thriving film industry. From documentaries like “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple” to unconventional films like “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney,” there is a wide array of Canadian talent on display. Furthermore, films like “The Stunt Driver” and “Smudge the Blades” explore unique Canadian stories and showcase Indigenous talent in the industry.
