Winnipeg officials made a public appeal on Friday to address the persistent issue of arson, a matter Mayor Scott Gillingham described as deeply troubling. Gillingham highlighted the recent surge in serious fires, particularly in the downtown area, causing damage, displacements, and instilling fear among residents.
During a press briefing at the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters, Gillingham emphasized the collective responsibility in combating arson, stressing that government efforts alone are insufficient. He urged Winnipeggers to actively engage in prevention measures, emphasizing the vital role of public cooperation.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by Christian Schmidt, chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, citing the city’s high incidence of fires compared to similar cities. Police Inspector Jen McKinnon revealed that 177 arson cases were under investigation in the first nine months of 2025, leading to charges against 23 individuals, some linked to multiple incidents.
