A high school football player from Winnipeg who sustained a severe neck injury in a game two weeks ago has passed away. Stephanie Ciaralli shared the news on Facebook, expressing relief that Darius Hartshorne, affectionately known as Dee, is now at peace. Hartshorne, a Grade 12 student at Sisler Spartans, was injured during a match against the Tec Voc Hornets when he was tackled while returning the opening kickoff on October 17.
Ciaralli, who considered Hartshorne her son, praised his strength and character in a heartfelt post. The community mourns the loss of Hartshorne, a well-liked member of the team, remembered by head coach Sean Esselmont as a genuinely kind young man. The Spartans have paid tribute to Hartshorne by wearing decals featuring his jersey number and displaying his jersey prominently at games.
Hartshorne had been placed in an induced coma due to medical complications but unfortunately did not recover. Leaders and politicians, including Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew, offered condolences to Hartshorne’s family and the school community. Coun. Vivian Santos also honored Hartshorne’s memory during a city council meeting.
Despite turning 17 in the hospital, Hartshorne’s condition did not improve, leading to his passing. The tragic incident has deeply affected the community, with many expressing sadness and offering support to those grieving the loss of a promising young athlete.
