Victor Willis, the lead singer of the Village People who co-wrote their famous disco hits Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man, passed away at the age of 74. The news of his death was shared on the official Facebook page of the group.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of VICTOR WILLIS, the lead vocalist of Village People,” the post read.

The announcement mentioned that Victor had succumbed to a brief but aggressive illness on Tuesday.

His wife, Karen-Huff Willis, confirmed the news on the musician’s Facebook page, urging for privacy during this difficult time.

Born in Dallas on July 1, 1951, Willis, a musician-actor, gained fame for his portrayal of the Village People’s police officer character. He decided to join the group in 1977 during the disco era, which included members dressed as a biker, construction worker, cop, cowboy, and Indigenous chief.

Together with producer Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, Willis formed the six-member Village People. The group’s debut album was released in 1977.

In the following years, Village People released successful albums like Macho Man, Cruisin’, and Go West, with hit songs such as Y.M.C.A. and In the Navy.

The iconic song Y.M.C.A. was recognized by the U.S. Congress in 2020 and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2021.

Aside from his music career, Willis also appeared in the film Can’t Stop the Music in 1980.

Village People’s music remains a staple at various events like parties, dances, weddings, and even political rallies. The songs are widely appreciated for their ability to uplift spirits.

Victor Willis’ association with the hit song Y.M.C.A. led to its frequent use at public gatherings, including at the White House and during Donald Trump’s events.

Despite other artists objecting to the use of their music by Trump, Willis never felt he was endorsing the former president when the Village People’s songs were played.

Willis’ ties to the Village People’s music were legally confirmed in 2015 when he was granted 50% copyright ownership in the United States for 13 of the group’s songs, including Y.M.C.A.

Following personal struggles, including legal issues and drug-related incidents, Willis expressed in 2012 that his life had taken a positive turn.

Recently, in May, Willis and the Village People performed at an event in India, showcasing their enduring appeal.
