Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Qatar has pledged substantial investments to support major infrastructure projects in Canada. The funding is expected to expedite project completion, boost the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. Carney made these remarks at a press conference in Doha, Qatar’s capital, emphasizing the importance of this partnership as a new phase in the countries’ relations.
In addition to the financial commitments, the two nations plan to enhance cultural ties through increased direct flights between Canada and Qatar to stimulate tourism and business activities. Carney highlighted the significance of mutual cultural understanding in fostering trust and collaboration between nations.
After prolonged negotiations, Canada aims to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by the summer. Furthermore, Canada will deploy a defense attaché in Doha to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.
During his visit, Carney met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and extended an invitation for the Emir to visit Canada later this year. The leaders discussed enhancing bilateral relations and agreed to maintain communication, with Carney inviting the Sheikh to visit Canada in the upcoming year.
Carney’s trip to Qatar aims to bolster trade relations and partnerships in various sectors such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense. This visit follows his recent engagements in Beijing, where he collaborated with Chinese officials to strengthen trade relations. The government’s objective is to diversify investment sources and expand trade beyond traditional allies like the United States.
The visit concluded with a formal welcome ceremony at the Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s government headquarters, where Carney was greeted by an honor guard. Canadian cabinet ministers also attended the event, showcasing the importance of the diplomatic engagements. The trip will culminate with Carney’s participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
