U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed a forthcoming meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House this Friday. This encounter marks the first face-to-face discussion between the Republican leader and the democratic socialist victor of this month’s mayoral election.
Mamdani and Trump have engaged in public criticism of each other, with Trump endorsing Mamdani’s rival, Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, in turn, has openly voiced disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and U.S. backing of Israel during the recent Gaza conflict.
Trump announced via social media that the meeting is scheduled to take place at the Oval Office on November 21st. Mamdani’s team initiated contact with the White House earlier this week to organize the meeting, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Mamdani.
The agenda for the meeting is reported to include discussions on public safety, economic stability, and the city’s affordability initiatives. During the recent mayoral campaign, Trump had threatened to withhold significant federal funding from New York City if Mamdani emerged victorious.
According to a report by the New York State Comptroller, the U.S. federal government allocates approximately $7.4 billion to New York City in the fiscal year 2026, constituting around 6.4% of the city’s total budget. Since Mamdani’s electoral success, Trump has inaccurately characterized him as a “communist.”
Mamdani, in response, has made it a central theme of his campaign to challenge Trump’s policies in the city, particularly on immigration issues. In his victory speech, Mamdani expressed his ambition for New York to set an example in resisting the president. He has also discussed plans to “Trump-proof” the city upon assuming office in January, emphasizing a willingness to collaborate with all parties for the betterment of New Yorkers.
The swearing-in ceremony for Mamdani as mayor is scheduled for January 1st.
